At Island Free Library, we’re more than just books—we’re a gathering place, a lifeline, and a warm welcome to all. As one of the few year-round community spaces on Block Island, we offer essential services, programs, and resources that support our neighbors in every season. Whether you’re a resident, a seasonal worker, or just visiting, this is your place to connect, recharge and belong.

Our Free Fridge is a community-powered food pantry located inside the library. It’s stocked with fresh produce, pantry items, and prepared foods—freely available to anyone who needs them, no questions asked. Donate fresh vegetables, ready meals or shelf-stable items. Items should have current expiration dates and be unopened. Homemade meals are acceptable as long as ingredients and dates are clearly marked. Every little bit helps! We also provide some amenities thanks to Amenity Aid of RI!
As always, give what you can and take what you need!

Block Island welcomes students from around the world each season. We provide local library cards for summer workers to local guides, job and housing resources, translation tools, and a safe, inclusive space to relax or study.

Enjoy free WiFi, charging stations, and comfortable outdoor seating in our beautiful garden space. Perfect for catching up on emails, meeting with friends, or simply soaking in the sun.

During the quiet winter months, the library remains a vital gathering place. Come in to warm up, read a local paper, use our computers, attend indoor programs, and connect with others. We’re here to help bridge the seasonal gap with comfort and community.
Looking for things to do on Block Island? We host and promote a wide range of events—from author talks and movie nights to craft workshops and seasonal celebrations.
